Baby clothing accounts for 50% of all baby shower gifts. And it's no wonder - baby clothing is such fun to look at and buy. Prints and fabrics that we love all miniaturized for baby to wear. Who wouldn't want to shop for baby clothing!
Many retailers and specialty stores sell baby clothing and matching layettes. It's a wonderfully inundated market making babies potentially the best dressed of all humans. While form is on the minds of most people, function is on the mind of the new mom. Wash and wear is the most important function of baby clothing.
Because babies grow so quickly the first two years of life, baby clothing comes in many sizes. Newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6 months, 6 to 9 months, 12 months and 24 months. However, don't let the sizes fool you. They aren't meant to strictly correspond to a baby's chronological age. In fact, most babies wear 0 to 3 months for only the first month of life and graduate to 24 months around the time they are a year old. Confusing as this size system may seem, it is something that every parent quickly becomes accustomed to.
Thankfully, the gender bias children's fashion industry doesn't transcend into baby clothing. Lots of baby clothing remains gender neutral, with colors like yellow, lime green, and red. Often, the print gives away the intended gender, but most often, sleepers can be worn by baby boy or girl. It isn't until the clothing reaches the 2T to 4T mark that it becomes evident that more time is spent designing girls clothing than boys.
If you are shopping for baby clothing for yourself or someone dear to you, congratulations on the newest person to come into your life. May you be blessed in the years ahead while getting to know them!
